Embarrassed to be introduced to Ali Abbas Jalalpuri so late, I read the book in urgency to find the intellectual gems for which Jalalpuri is famously remembered and I must say that the experience was refreshing.Jalalpuris critique of Iqbal, though multifaceted, emanates from a single contention that Iqbal should primarily be read as a theologian (insofar as having faith-based premises and not literally a trained theologian in religion proper) rather than a pure philosopher.

This contention, in my humble (and not so erudite) opinion, is refreshing in itself because it provides ways to understand (and possible reconcile) many presumed contradictions between various poetic themes and Iqbals attempt to provide philosophical basis for reconstruction religious thought in Islam.Overall, I find Jalalpuris critique intriguing and very thought provoking and I am going to check Jalalpuris other works despite my shameful reluctance to read philosophy in Urdu.
